Swedish court sentences Yemeni man for honor-based oppression
A Swedish court has sentenced a Yemeni man, Yaqoob Qaed Hamood Moncer Al-Haidari, to prison and deportation following charges of honor-based oppression, assault, and threats against his former partner and child in Uppsala.
During the proceedings, a lay judge representing the Green Party, Kim Bergström, issued a dissenting opinion. Bergström argued for the acquittal of one specific threat, suggesting the charge should be downgraded from honor-based oppression to aggravated violation of a woman's integrity. He contended that certain threatening phrases regarding executing children might carry different cultural meanings in Arabic than a literal translation suggests.
However, the majority of the court followed the prosecutor's position, upholding the convictions and the order for deportation.
