Sweden’s low diesel prices draw foreign truckers

Sweden’s recent cuts to fuel taxes have pushed diesel prices among the lowest in the EU. The cheaper fuel has spurred “fuel tourism,” with foreign haulage firms from Denmark, Norway, Finland and Germany routing trucks across the border to refuel.

A Danish driver earned about 5,800 SEK, a Finnish driver 7,500 SEK and a Norwegian driver 4,000 SEK on a single 1,000‑liter fill on 23 July, when the cost of diesel was 16,300 SEK. The tax reductions are estimated to cost the Swedish state treasury 9.3 billion SEK. Energy Minister Ebba Busch said the policy poses no problem and even benefits foreign drivers.
