Swedish election error potentially invalidates 500 votes

Approximately 500 voters in 50 Swedish municipalities, including Stockholm, may have had their early votes invalidated due to administrative errors. The issue arose when voters were mistakenly assigned the registration numbers of other individuals, preventing their votes from being correctly recorded.

Nooshi Dadgostar, leader of the Left Party, was among those potentially affected after voting in Rinkeby. While Stockholm city officials later confirmed that Dadgostar’s specific vote was successfully registered, she has stated she intends to vote again on election day to ensure there is no doubt regarding the final result.

The Swedish Election Authority has urged anyone who voted at the affected locations to cast their vote again on election day, noting that early voting cannot be repeated as it would invalidate the vote. Dadgostar expressed significant concern that the error could undermine public trust in the electoral system and called for the authority to implement massive information campaigns to reach all affected citizens.
