Swedish energy sector warns of investment risks and high taxes

Energiföretagen Sverige has expressed concern regarding a proposal from the Swedish Energy Markets Inspectorate (Ei) for new revenue regulation for electricity grid companies. The organization warns that the proposal could stifle investments in the expansion and modernization of the Swedish power grid between 2028 and 2031. Specifically, a fundamental change in how the calculation interest rate is determined could lower it to an estimated 1.99 percent, potentially hindering electrification and creating a future maintenance debt.

Separately, debates regarding electricity costs in northern Sweden, particularly Norrbotten, highlight the economic pressure on businesses. Critics argue that Sweden's electricity tax, which is among the highest in the EU, acts as a penalty on electricity use. Current tax structures are described as inequitable, with large-scale industry receiving significantly lower tax rates compared to ordinary consumers. There are calls to abolish the automatic indexation of electricity taxes to strengthen regional competitiveness and support the transition from fossil fuels.
