Swedish experts warn about AI's climate impact and escalating risks

Klimatkollen, together with sustainability consultancy 2050 and data firm Unearth, has launched an AI‑climate calculator that lets companies estimate the emissions from their AI use. The tool draws on publicly available research on model energy consumption and the electricity mix of data centres, but acknowledges that many details remain hidden. Its creators stress that most emissions stem from the ongoing operation of AI models rather than training, and that firms can lower their footprint by choosing providers that run models in low‑carbon regions—pointing out the advantage of Sweden’s largely fossil‑free electricity mix.

At the same time, Swedish commentators such as professor Olle Häggström highlight a split among AI critics. Some focus on current issues like bias, hallucinations and data‑center energy use, while others warn of broader future threats, including labour‑market disruption and existential risks if AI surpasses human intelligence. The debate calls for careful regulation to steer development toward benefits while mitigating both environmental and societal dangers.
