Swedish Far‑Right Leader Jimmie Akesson Seeks Government Role for Sweden Democrats

Jimmie Akesson, leader of the Sweden Democrats, has moved the party from a long‑standing outsider to Sweden’s second‑largest political force. After four years of supporting Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson’s centre‑right minority government from outside the coalition, the party now demands a share of power in the upcoming September election, aiming to join the cabinet and control key ministries such as justice, defence, foreign affairs or finance.

The Sweden Democrats, founded in 1988 with roots that include neo‑Nazi figures, have reshaped Swedish policy, especially on immigration, tightening asylum rules and welfare conditions. Their shift from being ostracised by mainstream parties to being tolerated – and now potentially governing – marks a significant rightward turn in Swedish politics that could alter the balance of power after the election.
