Swedish Moderate Party outlines 70 billion‑kronor financing plan
Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson presented the Moderate Party’s proposal to fund its election promises by saving roughly 70 billion SEK. The plan relies on cutting bureaucracy, introducing a “sharper work line”, and reducing welfare fraud. Savings are expected to come from: • 40 billion SEK by reducing agency budgets, a waste‑commission and more efficient procurement; • 21 billion SEK through the work‑line measures, including lower structural unemployment, reduced tax on work and adjustments to unemployment insurance; • 10 billion SEK by curbing benefit fraud. The party claims it can cover the 68 billion SEK pledged in its programme and also intends to re‑allocate some foreign aid to domestic welfare and defence. Svantesson noted that the Moderates will need to negotiate with other parties to pass the reforms, but expressed confidence in securing most of the measures.
