Swedish government approves $1.6 billion crisis aid for farmers, fishers and aquaculture

The Swedish government has formalised a crisis‑support package worth about 1.6 billion kronor for crop producers, commercial fishers and water‑culture operators. The aid is allocated on a hectare basis – 400 kr per ha for protein crops, 975 kr for other crops and 1 200 kr for winter grains, oilseeds, potatoes, sugar beets and vegetables – covering 85 % of the estimated extra fuel and fertilizer costs. Minimum support begins at 5 000 kr per farm and the scheme will be administered by the Swedish Board of Agriculture, with payments due by 31 December 2026. Rural affairs minister Peter Kullgren said the measure aims to prevent primary producers from bearing the full burden of the volatile global market.

In a related debate, the poultry association Svensk Fågel warned that Swedish taxpayers continue to subsidise intensive “turbo‑chicken” production despite animal‑welfare concerns. A Novus poll cited in the piece found that “7 of 10 want a ban on turbo chickens.” The association faces consumer pressure and calls for policy changes to redirect subsidies toward higher‑welfare and plant‑based farming.
