Swedish Green Party criticized for weak local climate action

Green Party representatives said Ale municipality has adopted only seven of the thirty climate targets set by the Västra Götaland region, far fewer than nearby Lilla Edet (ten), Kungälv (twenty‑one) and Gothenburg (all). They urged Ale to adopt more measures such as a municipal carbon‑budget, climate‑smart procurement, electrification and free public transport for children and youth, warning that recent cuts to the culture‑ and sports board and the removal of a zero‑tax scheme for clubs could hurt young people.

At the national level, party spokesperson Pontus Tengby highlighted achievements that include new nature reserves, progress on clean water projects such as a provisional treatment plant for Farstaviken, and plans to expand wetlands and improve water‑infrastructure. He also stressed the party’s focus on building on already developed land, protecting nature, and strengthening cultural life, while acknowledging past investment delays and audit concerns that the party is working to resolve.
