Swedish Green Party pushes major rail investment and climate‑proofing plan

At Almedalen week, Green Party spokesperson Daniel Helldén and co‑spokesperson Amanda Lind presented a sweeping railway proposal. They called for a system shift in Sweden’s rail policy, a crisis plan for heatwaves, and extensive climate‑adaptation measures. The party seeks an additional 216 billion kronor for new double‑track lines and main‑line (stamban) projects, and 282 billion kronor for operation and maintenance, more than doubling current rail subsidies from 6.4 billion to 15 billion kronor. The plan also aims to make the network resilient to floods, landslides and extreme weather, and to strengthen cooperation with neighbouring Norway, citing the strategic importance highlighted by the war in Ukraine.

Helldén warned of an approaching heatwave with temperatures up to 35 °C, urging a broader climate‑policy response that includes assessing care homes, preschools and urban areas for adequate shade. The proposals position the Green Party as a champion of aggressive infrastructure spending and climate protection ahead of Sweden’s NATO commitments.
