Swedish hockey players make headlines in NHL and SHL preseason

Several Swedish hockey players have made notable appearances during recent NHL and SHL preseason action.

In the NHL, Anaheim Ducks center Leo Carlsson scored a highlight-reel goal during a 6-2 preseason victory against the San Jose Sharks. Meanwhile, William Eklund scored in his first shift for the Ottawa Senators following a trade from San Jose, though the Senators ultimately lost 3-2 in overtime to the Montréal Canadiens. In that same game, Swedish goaltender Samuel Ersson made 33 saves in his Senators debut.

In Seattle, goaltender Victor Östman has been placed on waivers by the Kraken as the team conducts training camp cuts.

In the SHL, Frölunda forward Erik Thorell suffered an injury during a collision with Färjestad’s Axel Bergkvist during his highly anticipated comeback from a previous wrist injury, forcing him to leave the game.
