Swedish hospitals and tech alliance aims to lead Europe’s health data

Sweden’s seven university hospitals have joined forces with the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SKR), the private‑sector group Vårdföretagarna, TechSverige and Swedish Medtech to create a joint alliance for digital development in health care. The partnership seeks to make Sweden a leading node in the European Health Data Space by building interoperable infrastructure, re‑using patient information across research and clinical practice and promoting technology‑neutral, innovation‑friendly regulations.

The alliance’s leaders stress the need for coordinated action. Anders Henriksson, chair of SKR, said, “We must get digital Sweden to hang together, so patients and care‑givers have the best technology and information regardless of provider.” The initiative also targets three short‑term focus areas – national digital services and infrastructure, patient‑centred digital care, and secondary use of health data – to accelerate concrete solutions and dialogue with government authorities.

If successful, the effort could position Sweden’s university hospitals and health‑tech industry at the forefront of Europe’s health‑data revolution, leveraging the country’s extensive clinical data as a strategic asset for research, quality improvement and future therapies.
