Swedish household wealth shifts as stock assets overtake real estate

Swedish households are experiencing a historic shift in wealth distribution, with stock market assets now exceeding real estate assets for the first time according to SEB data. Total household assets have reached 32,667 billion SEK, a 9 percent increase over twelve months, while debt levels remain at a record low, representing only 17 percent of total assets.

Concurrently, consumer sentiment regarding the housing market is cooling. SBAB Bank reports that the proportion of homeowners expecting rising house prices over the next year has dropped to 48 percent in the third quarter, down from 52 percent in the previous quarter. On average, homeowners anticipate a 1.9 percent price increase over one year and a 4.7 percent increase over three years.

Economic factors such as geopolitical instability in the Middle East and concerns over rising market and mortgage interest rates are cited as primary drivers for the decreased optimism in the housing sector. While the stock market has benefited from growth in AI and defense sectors, the housing market has remained relatively stagnant.
