Swedish hurdler David Thid switches allegiance to Thailand for 2028 Olympics
David Thid, a 23‑year‑old Swedish 400‑metre hurdler with two national titles and a personal best of 49.12 seconds, announced he will change his sporting nationality to Thailand. The move aims to secure a place at the 2028 Olympic Games, which he believes is more attainable under Thailand’s selection system.
Thid criticised the Swedish Olympic Committee’s “top‑12” rule, saying he does not trust the body and fears he could be excluded from the Olympic team despite meeting international standards. He also highlighted better financial support and bonuses available to athletes representing Thailand. His mother is Thai, and the switch follows a recent trend of Swedish athletes changing allegiance for similar reasons. Swedish athletics coach Kajsa Bergqvist expressed respect for Thid’s decision while noting the loss for Swedish hurdling.
