Swedish investigation reveals radar visibility in fatal Tjörn boat collision

The Swedish Accident Investigation Authority (SHK) has released a status report regarding the fatal maritime collision that occurred in Hakefjorden near Tjörn on July 28. The incident involved the cargo ship Misje Verde, which was traveling from Uddevalla to Kragerø, Norway, at approximately 12 knots with a pilot on board.

During the incident, the Misje Verde collided with a recreational boat, causing it to sink immediately. The collision resulted in two fatalities and two serious injuries. Data from the ship’s voyage data recorder (VDR) and radar systems confirm that both recreational boats in the vicinity were visible on the cargo ship’s radar for some time prior to the collision. Minutes after the initial impact, the Misje Verde also passed a second recreational boat at close range.

A central focus of the ongoing investigation is determining why the crews on both the cargo ship and the recreational boats failed to notice one another and why no evasive actions were taken to prevent the collision. Investigators have conducted technical examinations of the vessels and interviewed relevant parties.
