Swedish managers face stress and isolation in new survey
A survey of managers in Sweden reveals a complex professional landscape characterized by high stress, contradictory demands, and poor organization. While most managers report being satisfied enough to remain in their roles—with only 8 percent intending to leave their careers—significant challenges persist.
Approximately 50 percent of managers have no plans to seek new employment in the near future, though some cite comfort or high salaries as reasons for staying in roles they may no longer find fulfilling. Conversely, about 20 percent express direct dissatisfaction, and nearly half expressed a desire to change industries or professional areas. Common grievances include an increasing administrative burden involving surveys, performance reviews, and hybrid work management.
Organizational psychologist Lill Palmblad notes that leadership well-being is often treated as a private matter, despite research suggesting that a pressured manager can negatively impact an entire organization. The study highlights a lack of confidential spaces for leaders to discuss doubts and sensitive issues without political consequences, which can lead to tunnel vision and unsustainable leadership.
