Swedish media debate erupts over alternative news categorization
The SOM Institute at the University of Gothenburg has sparked debate by categorizing several Swedish publications, including the syndicalist newspaper Arbetaren and the socialist magazine Flamman, under the umbrella of “alternative news media” in a survey regarding the parliamentary election.
Arbetaren has expressed strong opposition to this classification, noting that the term “alternative media” is often associated in the public consciousness with disinformation and conspiracy theories. The publication, which is owned by the SAC Syndicalists, emphasizes its long history and ideological roots as a non-partisan, freedom-socialist outlet.
Commentators have noted that while Arbetaren and Flamman serve as alternatives to the dominant mainstream media landscape, there is a significant distinction between these established ideological publications and right-wing outlets like Samnytt and Riks, which are often categorized together in the same survey group.
