Swedish mortgage rates show significant bank disparities
Recent data reveals significant disparities in mortgage interest rates among Swedish banks. According to a compilation from Zmarta, average variable mortgage rates in September stood at 2.72 percent, but individual bank averages varied widely. For instance, Skandia customers received an average variable rate of 2.58 percent, while Ikano Bank averaged 2.91 percent. This 0.33 percentage point difference can result in a cost discrepancy of approximately 9,900 SEK per year for a household with a three million SEK mortgage.
Additionally, fixed-rate mortgages have seen an upward trend. The average three-year fixed rate rose from 3.32 percent to 3.48 percent over a one-month period, while the five-year average increased from 3.56 percent to 3.65 percent. Experts note that the gap between variable and fixed rates is currently quite large, highlighting the importance for borrowers to compare actual average rates rather than relying solely on advertised list prices.
