Swedish municipalities ready new social services law focusing on early support

Sweden's new social services law, set to take effect on 1 July 2025, places a stronger emphasis on early, preventive interventions, individual‑tailored aid and evidence‑based practice. Ljusdal municipality is mapping its current services, consulting residents and preparing to adapt its operations to meet the law's requirements, said social chief Erik Fundin.

In parallel, a national "First line support" programme will launch on 1 March, offering immediate assistance without a means test. Officials such as social director Annika Rådström and newly appointed head Viktoria Larsson highlighted the aim to make services more accessible, increase outreach to children, youths and families, and streamline referrals to more comprehensive support when needed.
