Swedish municipalities under fire over super‑city rankings and political property deals

The ranking, based on highly subjective criteria such as growth potential and tax levels, has been criticised as unfair and unscientific, with commentators arguing it rewards already well‑off areas rather than encouraging broader municipal development.

Separately, an investigative report uncovered that local politicians in several Swedish regions—including the west coast, the mountains and Norrbotten—have purchased property without the municipality first establishing market values. Economist Andreas Bergh called the practice “unreasonable” and questioned whether it serves the interests of municipal residents.
