Swedish parents sentenced for aiding son in murder plot

A Swedish court has sentenced two parents to one and a half years in prison for their roles in a 2021 incident involving a murder plot in Gothenburg.

The case began when a 15-year-old boy accepted a contract to commit a murder but ultimately experienced acute anxiety and decided not to proceed. The teenager fled home with two semi-automatic pistols in a bag. Rather than contacting the police immediately, the parents attempted to assist their son by having a relative return the weapons to the original assigners.

Following this, the mother and son eventually went to the authorities to report the event. The district court ruled that while the parents' actions were a misguided attempt to help their child navigate a dangerous situation, they were guilty of aiding gross weapons offenses and gross protection of a criminal.
