Swedish parties dispute proposed hijab ban amid controversy

The Sweden Democrats (SD) have called for a total ban on the hijab, niqab and burka in Sweden, arguing the garments conflict with the country’s values of freedom and equality. SD spokesperson Sara Gille told SVT that the clothing represents “women’s oppression” but added that personal faith would not be prohibited.

Social Democratic politician Annika Strandhäll countered the proposal on social media, defending the hijab as a voluntary headscarf worn by “at least a billion women worldwide”. She cited religious texts and rejected the ban as a “hunt for immigrants”. Her remarks drew criticism from journalist Sofie Löwenmark, who highlighted numerous child‑welfare court cases documenting forced veiling and social pressure on girls.

Other parties in Sweden’s centre‑right coalition have mixed positions: the Christian Democrats support banning the burka and niqab and restricting hijab for young children, while the Moderates and Liberals stop short of a total ban, focusing on scrutiny in schools.
