Swedish physician calls for primary care reform
A physician specializing in psychiatry has issued a plea for systemic changes within the Swedish primary healthcare system. The author argues that current policies focus too heavily on accessibility, administrative management, and the use of temporary staff, rather than addressing the root causes of healthcare issues.
To improve patient outcomes and prevent emergency room overcrowding, the physician proposes several structural reforms. These include ensuring continuity of care by allowing patients to know their specific doctors, limiting the number of listed patients for full-time specialists to 1,100, and increasing the number of general practitioners. The author notes that while political parties in Region Sörmland campaigned on these targets, implementation remains a challenge.
