Swedish police report surge in elderly fraud scams in Jönköping
Police in Jönköping, Sweden, received about ten reports of fraud attempts targeting older residents. The scams involve false SMS messages offering services such as cleaning or home care, followed by calls from individuals pretending to be police or other authorities to gain access to victims' homes. In at least one case a woman was robbed of valuables after an intruder entered her house.
A separate discussion from a retail employee highlighted a customer repeatedly buying high‑value Apple gift cards, likely to be used in fraud schemes. The employee sought advice on whether it is legal to warn the customer or report the activity, noting that employer permission may be required under Swedish employment rules. Both incidents illustrate a growing pattern of scams aimed at seniors in the region.
