Swedish police to implement AI facial recognition in 2026

Swedish police are set to begin using AI-powered facial recognition technology to identify individuals in real time starting July 1, 2026. Jimmy Lindin, head of camera surveillance for the South Region, stated that the technology is necessary to keep pace with criminal developments.

The East Region is currently implementing the technology, with the South Region expected to follow by winter. While officials emphasize that the system is closed and data is not connected to the internet or shared externally, researchers and experts have expressed skepticism regarding its effectiveness in reducing crime. Police leadership noted that while there are risks associated with new technology, a robust system is essential for modern law enforcement.
