Sweden healthcare faces scrutiny over long waiting times

Healthcare services in Sweden are facing criticism following reports of extreme waiting times. In Region Halland, a patient reportedly waited 38 hours from initial contact to specialist care. While medical officials noted that the most critical patients are prioritized, critics argue this does not explain the systemic delays.

The Swedish Health and Social Care Inspectorate (IVO) has identified deficiencies across all 27 acute hospitals it inspected, citing shortages of hospital beds, overcrowding, and risks to patient safety. These findings highlight ongoing challenges regarding staffing, resources, and organizational structure within the regional healthcare systems.
