Swedish political debate intensifies over bank tax and SBAB

Political debate in Sweden has intensified regarding proposed fiscal policies targeting the banking sector. The Socialdemokraterna party has proposed a tax on banks, following a year in which the sector reported approximately 130 billion SEK in profits.

Critics of the Moderaterna party argue that the opposition's claims—that such a tax would be passed on to mortgage customers—highlight a lack of competition in the banking market. To address this, the Socialdemokraterna proposal includes utilizing the state-owned bank, SBAB, to exert downward pressure on mortgage rates.

There are ongoing disagreements regarding the role of SBAB. While proponents suggest it should act as a policy tool to increase competition, the Moderaterna party has moved toward treating the state bank more like a commercial entity, with Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson indicating a goal of privatization.
