Swedish political parties propose economic relief measures

Political parties in Sweden, including the Left Party (Vänsterpartiet) and the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterna), are proposing various economic reforms to address rising living costs and poverty.

The Left Party aims to restore social safety nets, specifically targeting unemployment insurance (A-kassa) to ensure that job loss does not lead to poverty. Their proposals include increasing benefits to 80 percent of previous wages, strengthening tax deductions for membership fees, and introducing a ‘baby grant’ for first-time parents to cover initial essential costs. They also advocate for increasing and index-linking the child allowance.

The Social Democrats are focusing on economic relief for families and workers, such as school and healthcare staff. Their platform includes doubling child allowance payments during Christmas and summer breaks, removing the sickness allowance deduction (karensavdraget), and lowering the cost of prescription medicines. Additionally, they propose making the ISK savings account tax-free up to 300,000 SEK and increasing protections against high electricity prices.
