Swedish potato supply expected to decrease amid rising consumer interest

Recent harvest inventories indicate that the supply of Swedish autumn and winter potatoes is expected to decline. The estimated gross volume has dropped from approximately 386,000 tons to roughly 336,000 tons, driven by reduced cultivated area and lower yields.

Despite this decrease in availability, consumer interest in potatoes is rising. According to the 2026 Potato Report, 20 percent of Swedish consumers express a desire to eat more potatoes, doubling the 10 percent recorded in 2018. The report highlights that 98 percent of households purchase potatoes, viewing them as an affordable and highly nutritious staple compared to alternatives like rice or pasta.

Consumers are also showing interest in culinary variety, with 56 percent wanting to try new cooking methods and 89 percent open to trying different potato varieties. While King Edward remains a popular variety, the industry is looking toward improving food system robustness and reducing losses during storage and processing to meet this growing demand.
