Swedish Public Health Agency reports high sexual violence rates among LGBTQ+ people

The Folkhälsomyndigheten released a report on the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of LGBTQ+ individuals in Sweden, based on the SRHR 2024 survey answered by nearly 16 000 people. About 1 000 respondents identified themselves as homosexual, bisexual or transgender.

The findings show that between 18 % and 40 % of LGBTQ+ respondents experienced discrimination or disrespect in the past three months. Sexual violence was reported by large parts of the group: half of bisexual women, one‑third of trans respondents and one‑fifth of bisexual men said they had been subjected to non‑consensual sexual acts, while physical harassment was also common.

Despite the high levels of violence, most respondents indicated good overall health and half said they were satisfied with their sex life. Folkhälsomyndigheten called for stronger measures to prevent sexual violence and to guarantee access to support and care for people of all gender identities and sexual orientations.
