Swedish right‑wing coalition secures parliamentary majority

A coalition of five right‑leaning parties – the Moderates, Christian Democrats, Sweden Democrats, Liberals and Centre Party – now commands over 50 % of poll support, giving them the numerical strength to negotiate the state budget and continue a programme of tax cuts on savings, jobs and consumption. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and party leaders such as Simona Mohamss emphasized that the reforms have boosted real‑wage growth, lowered unemployment and helped Stockholm’s stock market record a high number of listings.

The government’s agenda is linked to a marked decline in gun violence: homicide shootings fell from 62 deaths in 2022 to eight recorded so far in 2026. After a period of internal debate, the Liberals affirmed support for the coalition’s policies on school reform, increased defence spending and continued aid to Ukraine, arguing that these measures strengthen Swedish security and Europe’s collective defence.
