Swedish ship captain and pilot suspected in fatal Tjörn accident

A maritime collision off the coast of Tjörn resulted in a fatality, with a man and a child rescued after the incident. Both the ship's captain and the harbor pilot are now suspected of causing the death and of traffic negligence.

Legal experts say it is highly unusual for a pilot to face criminal charges, noting that responsibility for vessel navigation ultimately rests with the captain. Professor Johan Schelin of Stockholm University cites a 2020 Swedish case where a pilot was found negligent but not held fully liable. Lawyer Per M Kristiansson emphasizes that a pilot would only be arrested if active wrongdoing could be proven.

The pilot, who was aboard the cargo vessel at the time, has been assigned a defense attorney, Thomas Håkansson, who confirmed that the pilot has been interrogated and formally charged with two offenses. The pilot denies the accusations and is cooperating with police to clarify the events leading to the tragedy.
