Swedish Ski Federation seeks to block Russian athletes from Falun World Championships

The Swedish Ski Federation and the Swedish Sports Confederation (RF) are attempting to influence the Swedish government to deny visas to Russian athletes ahead of the World Ski Championships in Falun next February. This move follows a decision by the International Ski Federation (FIS) to ease restrictions, allowing more Russian cross-country skiers to compete under neutral status.

Pernilla Bonde, Secretary General of the Swedish Ski Federation, stated that while they must follow FIS decisions, they do not support them. The federation is discussing strategies with other Nordic federations and has raised the issue with the Swedish Sports Confederation to potentially involve the Ministry for Foreign Affairs regarding entry requirements.

Kajsa Sjösvärd, CEO of the Falun World Championships, noted that the potential participation of Russian athletes presents significant security challenges and increased costs due to the uncertain global situation. While 94 Russian athletes and 56 support staff have received clearance to compete in FIS World Cup events, some high-profile Olympic medalists remain excluded due to previous involvement in Russian propaganda.
