Swedish Social Democrats Criticized Over Crime‑Victim Reform

Lars Johnsson, a Moderate Party parliamentarian, wrote an editorial in the regional newspapers Kristianstadsbladet and Norra Skåne accusing Sweden's governing Social Democratic Party of failing crime victims. He argues that the government's proposed sentencing reform – aimed at harsher penalties for repeat violent and sexual offences – lacks an implementation date, financing and depends on a large expansion of the prison system.

Johnsson stresses that legislation must be realistic, well‑funded and respect the rights of victims, stating that "brottsoffer förtjänar bättre än att bli en bricka i en valrörelse" (victims deserve better than to be a pawn in a campaign). He calls for honest political debate and for the government to present reforms that are financially viable and legally sound.
