Swedish survey highlights sibling conflicts over elderly care and finances

A new survey by Familjens Jurist reveals that 18 percent of Swedes expect to experience conflicts with their siblings as their parents age. The primary drivers of these anticipated disputes include finances, inheritance, and assets (65 percent), followed closely by the distribution of caregiving responsibilities (63 percent) and the level of involvement required in supporting aging parents (61 percent).

Legal expert Magnus Brogren notes that conflicts often arise when there is no clear agreement regarding who manages medical visits, home care, or financial obligations. Lack of communication regarding these duties can lead to suspicions of unequal effort or ulterior motives among siblings.

In addition to family dynamics, financial experts highlight the increasing difficulty elderly individuals face in managing finances due to rapid digitalization. Betina Grimstrup, a private finance expert at Nordea, advises that early discussions regarding powers of attorney, payment cards, and inheritance planning are essential to prevent stress, errors, and fraud.
