Swedish Transport Agency warns of fake traffic fine SMS scams

The Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen) has issued a warning about fraudulent SMS messages that claim recipients have unpaid traffic fines and demand payment. The messages, which mimic official communications, ask for money or account details via text, a practice the agency says it never uses.

Police have received several reports from municipalities such as Vimmerby, Hultsfred and Västervik, where individuals received messages demanding up to 3,000 SEK for alleged traffic tickets. None of the victims paid, and the police confirmed the scams are ongoing, having also been reported earlier in the summer. The agency advises the public that any request for payment or personal data via SMS or email is a fake and should be ignored.
