Swedish twin study links artistic creativity to mental health issues
A study published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry has identified an association between artistic creativity and a higher frequency of mental health problems. The research, which analyzed data from more than 14,000 twins living in Sweden, examined various forms of creativity including music, writing, dance, theater, and visual arts.
In contrast to artistic expression, the study found no such pattern regarding scientific creativity. Scientific creativity did not show a significant association with most analyzed conditions and, in some measures, was related to fewer difficulties.
Researchers from the Max Planck Institute in Germany and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden conducted the study. By comparing identical twins, the team determined that genetic factors contribute to the link between artistic creativity and mental health, though they noted that environmental factors may also play a role and require further investigation.
