Swedish unions threaten strikes over pension and insurance disputes
Swedish labor unions LO and PTK are escalating tensions in negotiations with Svenskt Näringsliv regarding occupational pensions and injury insurance. The dispute centers on the age at which pension contributions and transition insurance cease. Currently, employer contributions stop at age 65, despite the state-mandated target retirement age being 67.
LO has already terminated agreements concerning Afa-insurances, transition insurance, and occupational pensions. PTK has also terminated agreements regarding occupational injury insurance. If new collective agreements are not reached by December 1, the peace obligation will expire, potentially leading to strikes.
Union representatives argue that the current system forces workers who become unemployed after 65 to withdraw pensions early, causing long-term financial loss. There are also concerns regarding the potential lapse of occupational injury insurance, which could leave workers without coverage and expose employers to legal claims.
