Sweeney Todd musical premieres at Buenos Aires’ Teatro Santa María
Stephen Sondheim’s darkly comic thriller musical Sweeney Todd will open at the new Teatro Santa María in Buenos Aires on Saturday 15 August at 20:30. The production, staged by Velka Producciones, adapts Christopher Bond’s play of the Sondheim score with a book by Hugh Wheeler. It tells the story of barber Benjamin Barker, deported to Australia and later returning to London to exact revenge on the corrupt Judge Turpin.
The Buenos Aires run will be directed by Marcelo Rosa, with César Tello handling musical and vocal direction and choreography by Pam. The historic venue is located at Montevideo 842, CABA, and the staging aims to recreate the oppressive, fog‑laden atmosphere of Victorian London while blending tragedy, dark romance and black humor.
