Sweepstakes Gaming Loophole Drives $100B Market, Mississippi Cracks Down

A legal workaround that values sweepstakes coins at just two cents has enabled a new category of online casino‑style games. By bundling sweepstakes coins with purchased gold coins, operators can offer real‑cash prizes while staying within U.S. federal sweepstakes law. The model underpins a rapidly expanding social gaming segment now valued at roughly $100 billion and projected to grow sharply, especially in North America where more than half of users reside.

In Mississippi, the newly empowered Mississippi Gaming Commission (MGC) has issued rules that block sweepstakes‑based casino sites from operating online in the state. The commission is sending cease‑and‑desist notices to operators such as VGW, Chumba, and LuckyLand, emphasizing that only traditional gambling, which remains illegal online, is prohibited. The tighter regulatory stance aims to curb unlicensed sweepstakes platforms while the broader industry continues to capitalize on the 2‑cent loophole.
