Sweet wine experts challenge traditional pairing perceptions
Wine experts are challenging the outdated perception of sweet wines as mere dessert accompaniments. Sommelière Anna Lefleur notes that while many consumers prefer dry wines, sweet wines offer significant versatility in modern cuisine.
Lefleur suggests that sweet wines pair effectively with spicy dishes, such as Thai curry, and various cheeses, including blue cheese, Münster, and Parmigiano Reggiano. Legally, sweet wines are defined as having more than 45 grams of residual sugar per liter.
In the Mosel region, winemakers are looking for temperatures as low as minus seven degrees Celsius to freeze specific Riesling grapes on the vine, a process essential for producing ice wine. Renowned sweet wine traditions exist in regions such as Tokaj in Hungary, the Mosel and Rheingau in Germany, Tuscany in Italy, and Portugal with Port and Madeira.
