Swift 6.4 introduces stable Subprocess API and faster WebAssembly bridging
The Swift programming language has released version 6.4, introducing several key technical enhancements. A major update is the stabilization of the Subprocess library, which provides a cross-platform API for starting and controlling external processes. This stabilization aims to replace previous platform-specific workarounds with a unified tool for managing external workers and utilities.
For web-based workloads, Swift 6.4 offers a significant performance boost via WebAssembly (Wasm). Specifically, Wasm-bridging through JavaScriptKit is reported to be up to 40 times faster than previous dynamic bridging methods. This improvement is expected to benefit web applications that require intensive interaction with JavaScript functions.
Additionally, the update improves interoperability with C++20 and Java, facilitating easier integration for developers working within existing codebases. Other technical refinements include support for non-copyable values and simplified mechanisms for concurrency.
