IBM and Swift integrate blockchain ledger for tokenized deposits

IBM has announced a beta integration connecting its Digital Asset Haven platform to Swift’s blockchain-based shared ledger. This connection enables financial institutions to manage and transfer tokenized deposits 24/7 using the existing ISO 20022 messaging standard, allowing banks to utilize current operational workflows rather than building entirely new blockchain-specific systems.

Swift’s shared ledger, which is built on a Consensys prototype and compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine, is currently being piloted by 17 major banks across six continents, including institutions such as HSBC, Citi, and BNP Paribas. The ledger acts as a coordination and synchronized record layer for Swift’s network of over 12,500 institutions, while final settlement continues to occur through established correspondent banking systems.

To address the security concerns of highly regulated Tier 1 banks, IBM has also introduced an on-premises deployment option for Digital Asset Haven. This allows institutions to run the platform within their own data centers on IBM Z and LinuxONE infrastructure, maintaining control over cryptographic keys via hardware security modules.

In a related development, the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX) has joined the Swift network by activating its Business Identifier Code. This move is intended to enhance ADX’s post-trade infrastructure and improve connectivity for international investors. Additionally, ACI Worldwide is integrating intelligent routing for Swift ledger transactions into its ACI Connetic payments hub to help banks manage tokenized deposits alongside traditional payment methods.
