Swift defers mandatory ISO 20022 readiness deadline to 2027
Swift has announced a deferral of its mandatory ISO 20022 readiness requirements, moving the deadline to November 2027. This shift aims to align with related market infrastructures, including the U.S. Fed Wire System and the Bank of England’s CHAPS. While the exact date within November 2027 is not yet established, the move provides additional time for global compliance with the new messaging standards.
Despite the extension, significant challenges remain regarding data quality. The migration involves moving from unstructured to structured address data. Data from April indicated that over 60% of payments still utilized unstructured debtor and creditor addresses. Failure to comply with the structured-address requirement risks payment rejections or delays, as there will be no fallback transition layer for missing data.
A survey by RedCompass Labs found that 44% of banks were behind schedule for readiness. The difficulty is often attributed to treating the migration as a simple message-format change rather than the necessary data quality overhaul. Large institutions face significant costs, with many spending between $20 million and $30 million to meet these requirements.
