Swift Telephone Network secures national telecom licence in Nigeria

Swift Telephone Network Limited (STN) has secured a Unified Access Service Licence (UASL) from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), effective October 1, 2026. This license authorizes the Nigerian-owned company to provide mobile, fixed, voice, and data services nationwide.

STN transitions from a telephone call service provider to a full-service operator. Managing Director and CEO Oluwole Adetuyi described the milestone as a commitment to building telecommunications infrastructure and bridging Nigeria’s digital divide. The company intends to pursue infrastructure projects, strategic partnerships, and investor engagements, though specific timelines and investment amounts have not yet been disclosed.

The new entrant faces a highly competitive market. As of July 2026, established players MTN Nigeria and Airtel Nigeria controlled approximately 86 percent of active mobile subscriptions. Additionally, while the license allows for national operations, it does not mandate coverage in underserved areas, which remains a significant challenge for connectivity in the country.
