Swiss Alps offer guided hikes with historic Saint Bernard rescue dogs

In the Swiss Alps near the Great Saint Bernard Pass, visitors can participate in guided hikes alongside Saint Bernard dogs. These animals have a long history in the region, having served as guides and rescuers during snowstorms and avalanches from the late 1700s through the early 1900s.

Today, the role of these dogs has shifted from physical rescue to social and educational engagement. The Barry Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving over 350 years of Saint Bernard breeding traditions, organizes these hikes. The excursions allow participants to learn about the breed's history, personality, and care while exploring the alpine landscape.
