Swiss archaeologists redraw Roman maps after drought discoveries

Archaeologists in the Swiss canton of Vaud are redrawing Roman maps following the discovery of long-buried ruins revealed by record-breaking summer heat and drought. The extreme weather created “parch marks” in vegetation, exposing traces of structures that were previously unknown or poorly understood.

Using drone imagery around Aventicum, the former capital of Roman Helvetia, researchers identified traces of thermal baths, houses, roads, and a potential temple. Archaeologist Jordan Anastassov described these as the most significant discoveries in the area in at least 50 years.

The team of five archaeologists is superimposing these findings onto existing maps to correct inaccuracies and fill in blank spaces. While some traces vanished due to mowing and cooling temperatures, the perimeter of a new bath pool remains visible in a partially withered field.
