Swiss Armed Forces face projected personnel decline by 2030
The Swiss Armed Forces are facing a projected decline in personnel, with numbers expected to fall below 130,000 by 2030. While the current strength of 147,017 remains above the required operational threshold of 100,000, the military loses approximately 12,000 conscripts annually, primarily due to individuals transitioning to civilian service.
This decline is partly attributed to the upcoming discharge of the final cohorts subject to a twelve-year service obligation in 2028 and 2029. To counter this trend, the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (VBS) and the Federal Council are considering several measures, including more flexible training and career models.
One notable trend is the increasing participation of women in the military, particularly in officer roles which require longer service periods. The proportion of women rose from 1.2% in 2022 to 1.8% in early 2026. To further encourage female recruitment, the Federal Council is planning to introduce a mandatory orientation day, a move that may be subject to a national referendum in 2028.
