Swiss authorities approve new Bern–Ostermundigen tram line
The Swiss Federal Office of Transport (BAV) has issued a building permit for a new 4.4 km tram line connecting Bern and Ostermundigen. The project, which will link Viktoriaplatz in western Bern to the Oberfeld area in eastern Ostermundigen, is designed to replace a high-traffic bus route that currently serves over 8.5 million passengers annually.
Implemented by the joint venture TBO AG (Tram Bern Ostermundigen AG)—comprising BernMobil, the City of Bern, and the municipality of Ostermundigen—the new line aims to increase public transport capacity, improve timetable reliability, and reduce traffic congestion. The infrastructure will feature 45-meter-long stops equipped for barrier-free access to enhance mobility for passengers with reduced mobility.
The project follows a previous public vote in favor of the development by residents of Bern, Ostermundigen, and the canton of Bern.
