Swiss cantons extend absolute fire bans for 1 August amid severe drought
All Swiss cantons hosting National Day celebrations have imposed an absolute ban on outdoor fires, fireworks, charcoal grills and height fires for 1 August because of extreme drought and a forest‑fire danger rating of level 5. The bans apply to Zurich, Glarus, Graubünden, Basel‑Stadt, Thurgau and other regions; fines for violations can reach up to 10,000 CHF. Limited exceptions are granted only for lake fireworks that receive cantonal approval and are closely supervised.
Italy’s own National Day on 1 August is also subject to a strict fire‑free order, with authorities warning that even a small spark could ignite a forest fire. An undercover investigation in Zurich revealed a fireworks dealer willing to sell without receipt to evade the ban. Swiss fire‑risk expert Boris Pezzatti confirmed that the measures are justified given the “very high” fire danger, and the Federal Office of the Environment has classified the whole country as being at maximal fire‑danger status.
The coordinated bans aim to protect forests, wildlife and public safety across the region as the summer heat persists.
